An art class at GKV school.....we created beautiful birds and then took them outside to fly high.
GKV - Gita Krishnamurthy Vidyalaya is a not-for-profit school located in Sankarnagar, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, India. The school has 20 teachers and more than 550 children. The school is run at zero cost to the students. The school is run on donations alone.
All students are from impoverished families nearby and are usually first-generation school-goers in their families. No distinction is made based on religion, caste or creed. Economic conditions are the sole admission criteria. Girls constitute a little over 52%.
I attended the laying and blessing of the first bricks for this school nearly eight years ago. Now the school is full and buzzing with eager and beautiful children. I have also visited the villages where they live. Their education is a real “game changer” - the cycle of poverty can, at last, be broken.
There are some amazing people in the world - some of whom work at and have been involved in setting up GKV.
